Introduction

                         Fish culture plays an important role in economy. It is gaining increasing importance for its potential for employment and income generation. It caters primarily to the needs of socioeconomically weaker and backward communities of fishermen scheduled tribes and scheduled castes which contribute to the poorest section of the society. Comparative progress in the field of fisheries sector after organisation of Chhattisgarh : -

 

Ø     Prior to the organisation of newly carved out state of Chhattisgarh the available water area has been 1.44 lakh ha. which has increased to 1.55 lakh ha. at the end of 2005-06, likewise 1.22 lakh ha. pisciculturaly developed water area has now raised to 1.38 lakhs ha.

Ø     Fish seed production units have been raised from 80 (93.89 ha.) to 243(217.11 ha.) nos.

Ø     Production level of standard fry form 2490 lakh has raised to 5055 lakh.

Ø     Under centrally sponsored accidental insurance scheme for active fishermen their number has raised from 15600 to 34857.

Ø     Fish production level from 79,000 M.T. has now raised to 1,31,751 M.T.

Ø     Pond construction on own lands of the farmers has now raised from 50 to 1724 (1155.00 ha.) nos.

Ø     Integrated fish farming units (viz. Duck-cum-fish culture, Pig cum fish culture, Poultry cum fish culture, Horticulture cum fish culture etc.) has now raised from 208 units to 2527 units.

Ø     Prawn poly-culture and ornamental fishery and cage culture have been taken up as a new venture after formation of the state. 250 prawn poly-culture, 05 ornamental fisheries and 02 cage culture units has now developed.
